Black Friday Holiday Deals: Are You Really Getting a Bargain?
The discounts are tempting, the countdown clocks are ticking, and your next holiday might be calling. But before you book, here's what you really need to check.
Black Friday is coming.
Which means our inboxes are filling with MEGA SALES, UNMISSABLE OFFERS, EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNTS and enough flashing countdown clocks to make you think the entire travel industry is closing down at midnight.
And the thing is, Black Friday might officially fall on 27 November this year, but the travel sales have already begun.
Some holiday providers have launched their offers weeks ahead of the big day, giving us plenty of time to browse, compare and - hopefully - find something wonderful.
And honestly? I love a good holiday bargain.
Who doesn't want to save a few hundred pounds on a week in the sunshine?
But there's something worth remembering before you get swept up in the excitement.
A big discount doesn't automatically mean a brilliant deal.
Black Friday can be an excellent opportunity to book your next holiday. Some offers provide genuinely attractive savings, while others might not be quite as spectacular as the marketing suggests.
The trick is knowing what you're looking at.
So, before you reach for your bank card, let's talk about how to separate the genuine bargains from the very enthusiastic advertising.
1. A Discount Isn't Always the Same as a Saving
Picture this.
You've had your eye on a lovely hotel in Greece. Last week, the holiday was £1,750.
Black Friday arrives, and suddenly there's a huge banner advertising £300 OFF!
Fantastic!
Except the holiday is now showing at £2,000 before the discount.
Your final price? £1,700.
You've still saved £50 compared with last week's price, which is lovely. But it's rather different from the £300 saving you might have imagined.
These figures are illustrative, but the principle is worth remembering.
Holiday prices fluctuate for all sorts of reasons, including demand, availability, flight costs and seasonal promotions. An advertised discount may be genuine under the offer's terms without necessarily representing the same saving compared with an earlier price you happened to see.
The Raia tip: If you've already spotted a holiday you like, make a note of the full price before the sales begin. Then compare the same dates, flights, room type and board basis when the offers launch.
Because the number that matters most isn't the discount.
It's what you're actually paying.

2. Check What's Included Before Celebrating
You've found a fantastic-looking holiday.
Seven nights in the sunshine, gorgeous hotel, excellent price.
What's not to love?
Well, potentially the £200 in baggage charges, the airport transfer you haven't booked and the fact that your flight lands at 1am.
Suddenly, that bargain isn't looking quite so bargainous.
When comparing Black Friday offers, look beyond the headline price.
Check whether your holiday includes:
- Checked luggage and cabin baggage
- Airport transfers
- Your preferred board basis
- The correct room type
- Any local tourist taxes or resort charges
- Suitable flight times and departure airports
A holiday that initially looks more expensive might actually offer better value once everything is included.
The Raia tip: Compare the total cost of the holiday you'd genuinely want to book, not just the cheapest version advertised.
Nobody wants to discover that their bargain involves sharing one suitcase between five people.
Especially when four of them apparently need seventeen outfit changes for a seven-night holiday.
3. Families: Pay Attention to the Small Print
Ah, the family holiday.
Beautiful beaches, swimming pools, quality time together and the annual challenge of finding a hotel room that accommodates everyone without requiring a second mortgage.
If you're travelling with children, particularly as a family of five or more, Black Friday offers need a little extra attention.
Many advertised holiday prices are based on two adults sharing a room.
That doesn't mean the same price - or even the same accommodation - will be available for a larger family.
Adding children can change the room configuration, available hotels and overall cost considerably.
You might need a family suite, interconnecting rooms or an apartment instead of a standard hotel room.
And then there's the age question.
A child who qualified for a particular rate last year might be charged differently this year, depending on the hotel's policies and the travel dates.
The Raia tip: Always search using the correct number of travellers and the children's ages at the time of travel.
And if you're booking for school holidays, remember that availability can be more limited for popular family resorts and larger room types.
A fantastic advertised price is only fantastic if it actually applies to your family.
4. Don't Let a Countdown Clock Make the Decision
ONLY 02:47:36 REMAINING!
Oh no.
The holiday is disappearing.
The offer is ending.
The internet is practically screaming at you to book immediately.
And suddenly you're considering a resort you've never heard of, in a destination you weren't planning to visit, because apparently you'll be saving £400.
Sound familiar?
Limited-time promotions are a perfectly normal part of travel sales. Some offers genuinely do end at a specific time, and availability can change quickly.
But a countdown clock isn't a substitute for making an informed decision.
Before booking, ask yourself:
Would I still want this holiday if there wasn't a sale banner attached to it?
If the answer is yes, brilliant.
If the answer is, "Well, I hadn't really considered going there, but it is 35% off..." perhaps give it another thought.
The Raia tip: Do your destination and hotel research before the sales start. That way, when a suitable offer appears, you can make a confident decision rather than a panicked one.

5. Check the Deposit, Balance and Cancellation Terms
A holiday might be advertised with a wonderfully low deposit.
And that can be a genuinely useful way to secure a trip without paying the full amount immediately.
But a low deposit doesn't necessarily mean a low financial commitment.
Before booking, check:
- How much is payable today
- When the remaining balance is due
- Whether the deposit is refundable
- What happens if you need to cancel
- Whether amendments are permitted and what they cost
- Whether the promotional price has additional conditions
Some promotional offers may have different payment or amendment conditions, so it's important to read the terms attached to the particular booking.
And remember that a low deposit doesn't necessarily limit your cancellation liability to that amount.
The Raia tip: Look at the total financial commitment, not just the amount needed to secure the booking.
A holiday should give you something to look forward to, not an unpleasant surprise when the balance reminder arrives.
6. Compare the Holiday, Not Just the Price
Here's where things get interesting.
Let's say you've found two holidays.
One is £1,800.
The other is £2,000.
Easy decision, right?
Not necessarily.
The £1,800 holiday might involve a late-night flight, a long airport transfer and a hotel that's a taxi ride from the nearest town.
The £2,000 holiday might include better flight times, transfers, a beachfront location and a room that's much more suitable for your family.
Suddenly, that £200 difference needs a little more consideration.
Of course, the cheaper holiday might still be the better option. It depends entirely on what matters to you.
Some people want to spend every minute exploring. Others want a gorgeous resort, good food and a sunlounger they don't have to fight for at 6am.
Neither is wrong.
The Raia tip: Decide what matters most before comparing offers. Location, transfer times, facilities, room layout and board basis can all affect the overall value of your holiday.
Because a bargain isn't much of a bargain if you spend the entire week wishing you'd booked somewhere else.
7. Make Sure Your Booking Is Properly Protected
This isn't the most glamorous part of holiday planning, but it's an important one.
Before paying, check who you're booking with, what type of booking you're making and what financial protection applies.
For UK travellers, qualifying flight-inclusive package holidays generally require ATOL protection, while other package arrangements may have different applicable protections.
However, not every flight, hotel or separately booked travel arrangement is ATOL protected.
Make sure you understand what you're purchasing, who is responsible for providing it and what protection you're entitled to.
It's also worth checking your travel insurance, particularly if you're booking well in advance.
The Raia tip: Don't assume every booking comes with the same protections. Check the details before paying, and make sure you receive the appropriate booking documentation.
Your Black Friday Holiday Checklist
Before you book, give yourself five minutes to check the essentials.
The price
- I've compared the final price, not just the advertised discount.
- I've checked the same dates, room type and board basis.
- I know what's included and what costs extra.
The holiday
- The destination and hotel actually suit us.
- The flight times and departure airport work.
- The room accommodates everyone travelling.
- I've checked the location and transfer arrangements.
The booking
- I understand the deposit and balance payments.
- I've checked the cancellation and amendment terms.
- I know what financial protection applies.
- I'm happy with the total price.
And perhaps the most important question of all:
Would I book this holiday at this price if there wasn't a giant BLACK FRIDAY banner above it?
If the answer is yes, you might have found yourself a very good deal.

So, Is Black Friday a Good Time to Book a Holiday?
Absolutely, it can be.
There are genuine opportunities to save money, particularly if you've already researched your destination, know your budget and have a good idea of what your ideal holiday should include.
But the biggest advertised discount isn't necessarily the best holiday deal.
And there's no prize for booking something unsuitable just because a countdown clock convinced you the world was ending in twelve minutes.
A £300 discount on the wrong holiday isn't a £300 saving. It's an expensive mistake with a promotional code.
The smartest approach is simple.
Know what you want. Understand what you're paying for. Compare the full holiday cost.
And if you find a brilliant holiday at a price you're happy with?
Go for it.
After all, the only thing better than a good bargain is a good bargain that takes you somewhere wonderful.
